Loket Castle is one of the oldest and most important castles in this part of Bohemia. It was a royal castle, later connected with powerful noble families, and for a long time it guarded the route through the Ohře River valley.
One of the most interesting things about Loket is that it wasn’t only a romantic medieval residence. From the late 18th century, the castle was gradually turned into a prison, and the prison remained here until the 20th century. That is why the darker parts of the castle do not feel like decoration — they are connected to the real history of the place.
The castle also has several small curiosities that make the visit more memorable. You can see part of the famous Loket meteorite, old porcelain, weapons, furniture, a Romanesque rotunda, and a tower with a view over the town.
What to See Inside Loket Castle

Loket Castle is open daily. The castle is usually open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (opening hours are slightly longer in the summer and shorter in the winter). Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
You can explore the castle on your own (in which case admission is 145 CZK) or take a guided tour (in English for 220 CZK).
Inside the castle, there is also a traditional crafts center where, for a fee, you can try your hand at some medieval crafts—a great experience, especially for children.

The best option is to take a direct bus from the terminal in Karlovy Vary; on weekdays, buses run approximately once every 30 minutes.

There are no direct trains from Karlovy Vary to Loket; you always have to transfer at Chodov or Nové Sedlo u Lokte

What Else to See in Loket and around
Don’t leave immediately after the castle. Loket is small, but the town itself is part of the experience, and it would be a shame to miss the main square, narrow streets and views from the river.
Walk around the historic centre, stop for coffee or lunch, and then go down towards the Ohře River. From there, the castle looks completely different, and it is one of the best places for photos.
The castle is also located near the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area, so the surrounding nature is beautiful. If you enjoy hiking, you can follow the green trail to the lookout point and Kamenný Creek, or follow the blue trail along the Ohře River all the way to the rocks Svatojánské skály. Where to Stay Near Loket Castle
I wouldn’t necessarily stay directly in Loket unless you want a very quiet overnight stop. For most visitors, Karlovy Vary is more practical because it has more restaurants, hotels, spa facilities and better transport connections.
