Whether you are arriving in Prague for the first time or flying home after your trip, this guide covers everything you need to know about Prague Airport, including terminals, transfers, airport services, lounges, and practical tips that can save you both time and money.

MY TIP: If you have an early morning departure, I can personally recommend Holiday Inn Prague Airport. It is located just a few minutes from the terminals and is much more comfortable than crossing Prague before sunrise.

Prague Airport Terminals

Prague Airport currently operates three terminals, although most passengers will only use Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 handles flights to countries outside the Schengen Area. If you are flying to destinations such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Turkey, Egypt, or other non-Schengen countries, this is usually your terminal.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 serves flights within the Schengen Area. Most flights between Prague and European Union destinations depart from here.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is primarily used for private aviation, charter flights, business jets, and government flights. Most tourists will never need to use this terminal.

Prague Airport Arrivals

After landing, passengers arriving from outside the Schengen Area must first pass through passport control. Once you collect your luggage, you will enter the arrivals hall, where you will find transportation services, ATMs, exchange offices, SIM card providers, and tourist information.

What to Do After Landing

• Passport Control – Only for non-Schengen arrivals.
• Baggage Claim – Follow the screens displaying your flight number.
• ATM Withdrawal – I generally recommend using a bank ATM rather than airport exchange offices.
• SIM Card or eSIM – Mobile services are available in the airport, although many travelers now activate an eSIM before arrival.
• Transport to Prague – Buses, Airport Express, taxis, Uber, and private transfers are available directly outside the terminals.

Prague Airport Transfer Options

The most common question visitors ask is how to get from Prague Airport to the city center. Fortunately, there are several reliable options which are very inexpensive and practical.

Public Transport

The fastest public transport connection is currently Trolleybus 59, which runs between Prague Airport and Nádraží Veleslavín station. From there, you can continue on Metro Line A toward the city center. The journey from the airport to Nádraží Veleslavín takes approximately 15 minutes.

Another option is bus line 100, which stops at the Zličín Metro Station (Line B).

Stops are located directly outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, making them easy to find after arrival.

Airport Express (AE)

The Airport Express bus connects Prague Airport directly with Prague Main Railway Station. This is a good option if you are continuing your journey by train.

The Airport Express costs 200 CZK per ride, so it’s much more expensive than public transportation. You’ll find the stop only at Terminal 1, right next to the public transportation stops. The Airport Express is only worth it if you’re in a hurry to get to the train station; otherwise, it’s better to take the trolleybuses or buses.

Taxi, Uber and Private Transfers

If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, arriving late at night, or simply prefer convenience, you can use Uber, which is the official taxi service at Prague Airport.

MY TIP: If you want to save money, take trolleybus 59 to the Divoká Šárka stop and order a Bolt from there. The fare will be half the price of a ride from the airport.

Car Rental at Prague Airport

You definitely don’t need a car to get around Prague; the public transportation system is fast, inexpensive, and reliable.

If you plan to travel around the rest of the Czech Republic, you can take trains and buses. However, a car can also be convenient, and there are many rental agencies at the airport.

Prague Airport Departures

Prague Airport is generally efficient, but during summer holidays and Christmas periods, security queues can become significantly longer.

How Early Should You Arrive?

• European flights: at least 2 hours before departure.
• Long-haul flights: at least 3 hours before departure.

Online Check-in

Most airlines operating at Prague Airport offer online check-in. Completing it before arrival can save time at the airport.

Security Check

Security screening is required before entering the departure area. Liquids, electronics, and carry-on baggage rules follow standard European airport regulations.

Fast Track

Passengers who want to avoid queues can purchase Fast Track access, which provides access to a dedicated security lane.

Services at Prague Airport

Prague Airport offers a surprisingly wide range of services, making it easy to spend a few hours there before departure.

Restaurants and Cafés

You’ll find a wide variety of restaurants in both terminals.

My personal recommendation is the Runway restaurant in Terminal 1 (before security), which has a terrace with a view and offers great food at very reasonable prices (you won’t even feel like you’re at the airport).

At Terminal 2, I like to go to the Czech fast-food chain Bageterie Boulevard (beyond security), where you can get excellent baguettes at a reasonable price.

Shops and Supermarkets

You’ll also find a large number of shops at the airport. The best place to shop is the Billa supermarket, located on the lower level of Terminal 2, near the connecting corridor between the terminals. There, you can buy snacks for the trip and basic toiletries at standard Czech prices.

Currency Exchange and ATMs

I generally avoid airport exchange offices because exchange rates are often less favorable than in the city center. Using an ATM is usually the better option.

Besides, you don’t need to carry a lot of cash to get around Prague—you can easily use a card. So there’s no need to withdraw money right at the airport; you can do it later in the city.

Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Prague Airport terminals.

Prague Airport Lounges

If you have time before your flight, Prague Airport offers several lounges where you can relax, work, or enjoy complimentary refreshments.

Mastercard Lounge

The Mastercard Lounge is located in Terminal 1 after passport control and offers food, drinks, workspaces, and charging points. Single-entry access is also available.

Erste Premier Lounge

The Erste Premier Lounge operates in Terminal 2 and serves Schengen departures. It is located after security control on the upper level of the terminal.

Where to Stay Near Prague Airport

I generally wouldn’t recommend staying near Prague Airport for an entire city break because Prague’s public transportation system makes it easy to reach the airport from almost anywhere in the city. Areas such as Vinohrady or the city center are usually more interesting for most visitors.

However, if you have a very early departure or arrive late at night, staying close to the airport can be a smart choice. In that case, I can recommend Holiday Inn Prague Airport, which is specifically designed for airport travelers.

Public transport in Prague is an affordable and convenient option that you can use to travel practically anywhere in Prague.

Unfortunately, there is no metro service to Prague Airport, but there are several connections that will take you to the nearest metro line. The IDOS app is useful for finding the best connection.

During the day, the following lines run to the airport (to both terminals):

• Line 59 – the trolleybus will take you to the Nádraží Veleslavín metro station (line A) – this is the fastest way to get to the metro
• Line 100 – the bus will take you to the Zličín metro station (line B)
• Line 191 – the bus will take you via many stops to Petřiny (line A) and to the Na Knížecí bus station (line B); this is the longest journey

The buses listed above are part of the integrated public transport system and you can use regular public transport tickets on them (see below). There is also a special AE (Airport Express) line from the airport, which connects the airport with the Main Railway Station (line C). Tickets can be purchased from the driver and cost CZK 200 (which is significantly more expensive than regular public transport) and you can only board at Terminal 1.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION: The AE line runs from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at intervals of 15–30 minutes. 

Where are the bus stops at Prague Airport?

Bus (and trolleybus) stops can be found at both terminals at Prague Airport. Just leave the arrivals hall and cross the road. The stops are clearly marked and usually have a large number of people waiting at them.

Where can I buy a ticket for Prague public transport?

You can easily buy a ticket for Prague public transport (which is also valid on all buses from the airport except the AE line) at the yellow ticket machines at the bus stop. You can pay by card or cash. You can also buy a ticket via the PID Lítačka app.

If necessary, you can also buy tickets at the Transport Company Counter (located in the arrivals hall at both terminals) or at the Visitor Center.

PLEASE NOTE: Your ticket is not valid until you validate it just before departure. You will find validators at bus stops or directly on the bus.  The validator will print the time from which your ticket is valid on your ticket. Without validation, your ticket is not valid.

What should you watch out for?

Although traveling by public transport from Prague Airport to the city center is very easy, there are a few things you should watch out for:

• Your ticket is valid for the specified period (e.g., 30 or 90 minutes) on any public transport in Prague, including transfers.
• The ticket must be validated (ideally immediately after boarding the bus or other means of transport). The arrows on the ticket indicate which way to insert the ticket into the validator.
• Never validate the ticket repeatedly (e.g., when transferring to the metro). One validation is sufficient!

Prague airport to city center by taxi

If you want to take a taxi from the airport, I would recommend using the Uber or Bolt apps. Uber is even the official taxi app of Prague Airport (see below) and can be ordered on site at the counter or from vending machines (if you don’t have the app).

Of course, there are also a large number of official Prague taxis (but unofficial for the airport) around the airport, but they are not allowed to offer their services directly at the airport. I definitely recommend avoiding these services, as they are often completely overpriced and notorious for scamming tourists.

Prague airport to city center by Uber

Uber is the official taxi service of Prague Airport. You can order Uber in several ways:

• using the mobile app – you can pay for the ride right away and know the price in advance
• self-service kiosks – if you don’t have a mobile phone or internet connection, you can use the kiosks to order Uber and pay by card
• counter – from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., there is also a counter at the airport where you can pay in cash

Once you order an Uber, you will receive instructions on which car the driver is in and where exactly you can find them. If you choose the official Uber Airport (among the options in the Uber app), it will stop right in front of the arrivals hall. If you choose a cheaper option (such as UberX), the car will stop at the express parking lot (located on the second floor of Terminal 2 (above the arrivals hall) immediately after exiting the departures hall, or at Terminal 1 directly in front of the arrivals hall across two roads).

How much is Uber from Prague Airport to the city center?

The price for Uber may vary depending on the current Uber traffic around the airport. Of course, it also depends on where exactly in Prague you are going. You can find out the price for Uber in advance by entering it in the app, even if you are not in Prague yet.

An official Uber Airport ride to the city center usually costs CZK 700-800. UberX can be significantly cheaper, even as low as CZK 400 at quiet times.

Prague airport to city center by Bolt

The Bolt app is my favorite way to get to Prague Airport when I can’t use public transport. It’s cheaper than Uber.

Bolt cars stop at express parking lots. At Terminal 2, you will find this parking lot on the second floor directly in front of the departure hall. At Terminal 1, the parking lot is in front of the arrival hall after you cross several roads and a bus stop.

Bolt is usually about CZK 100 cheaper than Uber.

MY TIP: If you want to save money (like me), take trolleybus 59 at the airport and get off at the Divoká Šárka stop. From there, order a Bolt, which is usually half the price. 

Prague airport to city center at night

You can easily get from Prague Airport to the city center at night. Public transport runs on a more limited schedule, but you can still use it. Vehicles are also available via the Uber or Bolt mobile apps.

You can also use two night public transport lines. Use the IDOS app to find the best connection.

• Line 907 – takes you to many stops in the city center (e.g., Hradčanská, Náměstí republiky, or Muzeum), then to Anděl, and you can continue on to Zbraslav
• Line 910 – passes through another part of the city center (e.g., I. P. Pavlova, Vyšehrad) and continues to Kačerov and then to Modřany

Since the metro does not run between midnight and 5:00 a.m., it does not make sense to connect to it, and it is better to use buses and trams to travel around Prague.

Frequently asked questions – Prague Airport to City Center

How much does a taxi cost from Prague Airport to the city center?

Taxis are not official at Prague Airport, so it is better to use the official app – Uber Airport. The trip usually costs around CZK 700–800.

How much does Uber cost from Prague Airport to the city center?

As mentioned above, when using Uber Airport, expect to pay around CZK 800. UberX is cheaper, and Bolt usually offers an even better price (about half the price of Uber Airport).

How much is the Airport Express in Prague?

Traveling on the Prague metro is very cheap and accessible. With a single ticket, you can use an unlimited number of means of transport in Prague (metro, trams, buses, and even trains) for a specified period of time. I have more information about tickets for you in the section below.

The current ticket prices are as follows:

Children under 15 and seniors over 65 can travel around Prague for free. However, you must always have valid ID with you to prove the passenger’s current age. People between 60 and 65 can purchase a discounted ticket.

Now you know how much tickets for the Prague metro cost. But where can you get them and how do you use them correctly? You will find out everything you need to know below.

Where to purchase tickets for Prague Metro?

Tickets for the Prague metro can be purchased in many places. However, the easiest way is to buy them from the yellow ticket machines. These machines are located in all metro stations, usually just before the entrance to the paid zone. You can pay by card or cash at the machines.

Alternatively, you can buy a ticket in the PID app. There are also contactless terminals at the metro entrance, which allow you to purchase a ticket immediately with a contactless card. In the metro, you may also notice official ticket windows, where there is usually a relatively long queue. These are intended more for locals, although single tickets can also be purchased there.

PLEASE NOTE: The ticket you have just purchased is not yet valid! It must be validated, only once (when you first enter the metro). The most common mistake tourists make in Prague is forgetting to validate their ticket or accidentally validating it more than once.

Where to validate tickets for Prague Metro?

Ticket validators are usually located in front of the escalators or stairs that lead directly to the platform. Remember that beyond this zone, you may be checked by ticket inspectors even if you have not boarded the metro.

Validate your ticket only once (before your first trip on public transport). The direction of validation is indicated by arrows on the ticket.

Prague metro lines

The Prague metro consists of three lines that are connected by three transfer stations. This allows you to transfer from any line to the other two lines.

These are the three lines of the Prague metro:

• Line A (green) – Nemocnice Motol – Skalka (Depo Hostivař): this is the most convenient line for traveling to tourist attractions, as it goes to Prague Castle, Malá Strana, and the Old Town
• Line B (yellow) – Zličín – Černý most: takes you to Smíchov and Anděl, areas that are less known to tourists but very popular with locals, and also passes through Wenceslas Square and Republic Square
• Line C (red) – Letňany – Háje: among other places, it goes to the main train station and the Florenc bus station.

Prague metro stations and stops

The three lines of the Prague metro have a large number of stops and stations. It would be pointless to list them all here. The following stations may be of interest to tourists:

• Hradčanská (line A) – the best access to Prague Castle
• Malostranská (line A) – in the heart of Malá Strana below Prague Castle
• Staroměstská (line A) – just a short walk to Josefov and Old Town Square
• Můstek (lines A and B) – transfer station in the middle of Wenceslas Square
• Muzeum (lines A and C) – transfer station near the National Museum
• Vyšehrad (line C) – just a short walk from the lookout hill and the oldest seat of Czech kings
• Hlavní nádraží (line C) – transfer to train lines
• Nádraží Veleslavín (line A) – trolleybus connection to the airport runs from here

All metro stations have ticket machines, mostly accessible toilets (not always in the best condition), small shops, and orientation signs.

The stations are very well marked with directions and exits. If you are connecting to the metro or tram, the IDOS app will show you the exit number, which will help you find your way around.

Prague metro schedule (timetable)

The Prague metro runs all day, with a break in service only between midnight and 5:00 a.m. During this time, you can use many night bus and tram lines.

Individual metro trains run at intervals of 2-4 minutes during rush hour and 5-10 minutes on weekends or outside rush hour.

Can one ticket be used by more than one person?

No, Prague metro tickets are non-transferable. Please purchase a separate ticket for each member of your group.

Do students get a discount on fares?

Yes, students get a discount on fares in Prague, but only for longer periods. This discount does not apply to short-term tickets (e.g., 24 or 72 hours).

Are the stations equipped with elevators?

Most Prague metro stations are equipped with elevators, but unfortunately this is not yet the case for all of them. Stations without elevators often have at least moving ramps for wheelchair users or for moving strollers.

Can I use the metro to travel from the airport to the center of Prague?

No, the metro does not go to the airport. However, you can easily get to the airport by trolleybus (line 59) from the Nádraží Veleslavín metro station or by bus (line 100) from the Zličín metro station.

Is the Prague metro safe?

Absolutely! I used to ride the metro regularly on my own as a child, and it is definitely not a risky activity. However, as in any other big city, you will encounter pickpockets here. So keep an eye on your belongings!

Of course, you will need a ticket to travel around Prague. The good news is that tickets are universal, and the same ticket is valid for travel on any type of public transport!

You can choose from the following types of tickets:

All tickets allow unlimited transfers and are valid from the moment of validation (see below). You can also buy tickets for longer periods (e.g., a month), but these are not usually relevant for tourists.

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets for 30 and 90 minutes do not include the cable car to Petřín Hill in Prague!

Children under 15 travel free on Prague public transport. However, you must always carry your child’s passport or ID card with their date of birth. People aged 60 to 65 pay a reduced fare, and people over 65 travel free (again, proof of identity is required).

Where to purchase tickets for Prague public transport?

Wondering where to buy tickets for Prague public transport? Fortunately, they are sold almost everywhere.

Basically, you have the following options:

• At a ticket machine – All types of tickets can be purchased at yellow ticket machines. These machines can be found in metro stations, at some bus and tram stops, and also at the airport.
• In the PID mobile app – You can also buy tickets in the PID mobile app. You then activate the ticket in the app, and the measured time starts running from that moment.
• Sales points – In some places, there are also sales points where you can buy a ticket at the window. I would not really recommend this option, as there is usually a long queue.
• Contactless payment terminals – In some places (inside trams, selected buses, metro stations), you can buy a ticket via a payment terminal. Passengers are required to purchase a ticket immediately after boarding the vehicle; only contactless payment cards can be used.

Ticket validation

It is very important to note that your ticket is not valid immediately after purchase. To validate your ticket, you must always validate it before your first journey!

Tickets can be validated in a ticket validator, which can be found on all trams and buses, as well as at many stations. The ticket is validated only once when boarding the first means of transport! From the moment of validation, the time limit begins to run (e.g., 30 minutes for travel by public transport).

A few tips for proper validation:

• Validate your ticket by inserting it into the validator before first use. The arrows on the ticket indicate the correct direction of insertion!
• When boarding other means of transport (e.g., when changing trains), never validate your ticket again!
• The ticket is valid from the time that the validator “printed” on your ticket.
• When traveling by metro, you need to validate your ticket when entering the designated area of the metro (not the train itself). Validators are usually located in the metro building just above the escalators or stairs.

WARNING: Unfortunately, it is a popular trick of many Czech ticket inspectors to check tickets in places where there are large numbers of confused tourists. For example, when traveling from the airport. If your ticket is not validated, it is invalid (and you will be fined)!

Ticket Inspection

There are ticket inspectors on Prague public transport whose job is to check valid tickets. These inspectors do not always speak English, but you will still pass the inspection without any problems.

If a man with a transport company badge approaches you on public transport, show him your ticket. It is important that it is still valid and correctly validated (only once).

However, you will most likely not encounter any inspectors and your tickets will not be checked during your visit to Prague.

Prague public transport pass

If you have purchased a Prague Visitor Pass (which also allows you to visit many attractions for free or at a discount), you can use Prague’s public transport freely and without restriction.

One of my favorite things about Prague public transport is that timetables and connection planning are very easily accessible. To find the best connection, I recommend using the IDOS app.

The app is in Czech by default, but you can switch to English in the settings. The app will find the easiest connection to your desired destination, including timetables, current delays, and lots of other information. The app also shows the metro exit code you should use to easily get to your connecting bus or tram.

Prague means of transport

The integrated public transport system in Prague includes a large number of means of transport that you can use with a single ticket.

Prague metro

Three metro lines connect the historic city center with more distant locations in Prague. A complete guide to the Prague metro can be found here.

The Prague metro consists of three lines:

• Line A (green line) – Nemocnice Motol – Skalka (Depo Hostivař) – passes through Malá Strana and the Old Town and also offers connections to trolleybuses to the airport
• Line B (yellow line) – Zličín – Černý most: takes you to Náměstí Republiky or Wenceslas Square and offers connections to buses to the airport
• Line C (red line) – Letňany – Háje: runs to Hlavní Nádraží, Florenc bus station, but also to Wenceslas Square and Vyšehrad

Three of the stops are transfer stops, so you can transfer from any line to any other. Trains run every 2–4 minutes (during peak hours) and every 5–10 minutes (outside peak hours).

Prague tram

Trams are another great means of transport that you can use to travel around Prague (especially useful in the city center). The tram network is comprehensive and relatively complex, so it is best to use the above-mentioned app to find connections.

You can also see the historic tram No. 23 on the streets, which is part of the integrated system. Tourist trams No. 41 and 42 are not part of the system, and regular tickets cannot be used on them.

Prague buses

Especially for trips outside the historic center, you can use one of the many bus lines. Buses will take you practically anywhere, so you can stay in cheaper and more authentic places outside the center.

Prague trains

There are a large number of train connections in the Czech Republic, and many of them stop at various stations in the center of Prague. You can also use trains to get around Prague.

The main train stations include Hlavní nádraží, Praha-Smíchov, Praha-Vršovice, Masarykovo nádraží, and Praha – Holešovice.

Traveling by train within Prague is part of the integrated system, and a regular ticket is sufficient (you can tell that the station is still part of Prague by the fact that the name begins with Praha, for example, Praha – Radotín). Tickets are only valid on lines marked S or R.

PLEASE NOTE: You will not usually find ticket validators on trains! If you plan to use the train, validate your ticket on the platform.

Cable cars, ferries, and other means of transport

The Prague public transport system also includes a number of other means of transport.

These include, for example, the Petřín funicular (only 24- and 72-hour tickets can be used, not shorter ones), trolleybuses to the airport from the Nádraží Veleslavín metro station, and even ferries.

There are a total of six ferries across the Vltava River in Prague. Tourists may be interested in line P5, which connects Císařská louka Island with both banks of the river.

Prague public transport timetable

Prague public transport operates 24 hours a day, but with limited service at night. It is best to search for timetables using an app that will offer you reliable and up-to-date connections, including delays.

Prague public transport at night

At night, buses and trams in Prague run with different numbers and routes and, of course, longer intervals. The metro does not run overnight (from midnight to 4:30 a.m.).

Otherwise, night lines operate in exactly the same way as other lines.

Prague Airport to City Center by public transport

Prague Airport is connected to the public transport system, making it easy to travel to any location in Prague.

Two main lines serve both airport terminals:

• Trolleybus 59 (connected to metro line A): this trolleybus stops at Terminals 1 and 2 and terminates at the Nádraží Veleslavín metro station on line A. You can continue to the city center by metro.
• Bus 100 (connected to metro line B): this bus connects both terminals with the Zličín metro station on metro line B.

A regular Prague public transport ticket (see above) is valid on both of these lines. There is also a special express line AE, which runs to the Main Railway Station for CZK 200. This line is not very cost-effective, so only use it if you are in a hurry to catch a train.

At night, two lines run to the airport – 907 and 910.

Where can I buy a ticket at the airport?

There are a number of ticket machines at the bus stops where you can buy all types of tickets (see above). You can pay in cash or by card.

After purchasing your ticket, don’t forget to validate it in the validator. The direction of ticket validation is indicated by an arrow on the ticket. Only validate your ticket once (i.e., at the airport); do not validate it again when transferring to other modes of transport!

What is the fastest way to get to the city center?

The fastest way to the city center is definitely by trolleybus no. 59 to the Nádraží Veleslavín metro station, from where you can continue by metro line A to the city center. The metro stops on the Lesser Town side (Hradčanská and Malostranská stations) and also on the other side of the river (Staroměstská, Můstek, and Muzeum stations).

Where do trolleybuses and buses stop at the airport?

Once you leave the arrivals hall, follow the signs for public transport. The first road (directly in front of the arrivals hall) is for taxis, and you will see the bus stop on the second road. The signage is very clear. All buses and trolleybuses stop at Terminals 1 and 2.
