Bus connections exist, but they are generally less convenient than the train. Travel times are often longer and departures are less frequent.

Direct trains from Prague run to Kutná Hora – Main Station, for example, you can take the R9 train, which departs from Prague Main Station at 8:04.

Start your day at the Sedlec Ossuary, located only a short walk from Kutná Hora hlavní nádraží station.

The chapel contains the remains of approximately 40,000 people and is famous for its extraordinary decorations made entirely from human bones. The bone chandelier and the Schwarzenberg coat of arms are the highlights most visitors come to see.

The walk takes around 40 minutes and passes several interesting historic buildings along the way. If the weather is good, I usually recommend walking because it helps you understand how the city is laid out.

Just a 5-minute walk from the Ossuary, bus 381 stops at the “Kutná Hora, Sedlec, Ossuary” stop. This bus runs to the “Kutná Hora, Žižkov, Na Valech” station (near St. Barbara’s Cathedral) once every half hour.

As you approach the center, you’ll notice why Kutna Hora became one of the wealthiest cities in medieval Europe. Many historic buildings were financed by the profits generated from silver mining.

Once you arrive in the city center, I recommend visiting St. Barbara’s Cathedral first. It is the highlight of any visit to Kutna Hora.

Construction began in 1388 and continued for centuries. The church was dedicated to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, which reflects the city’s close connection to silver mining. After your visit, don’t leave immediately. Walk along the terrace in front of the former Jesuit College. From here, you’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the church. The GASK gardens also offer lovely views.

One of the museum’s most interesting experiences is the underground route through a medieval silver mine. Return to Prague

The historic center is just a short walk from the Kutná Hora – Město train station, from where you can take a train back to Prague.

There are no direct trains from the Kutná Hora – Město station; you’ll need to transfer in Kolín or at the main train station in Kutná Hora.

For example, you can take the S28 train, which departs at 4:44 p.m. for the main train station, where you’ll transfer to the R9 train to Prague.

The story of the ossuary begins in the 13th century when an abbot of the nearby monastery brought soil from Jerusalem and scattered it across the local cemetery. As a result, the cemetery became one of the most desirable burial places in Central Europe.

During the Black Death and the Hussite Wars, thousands of additional bodies were buried here. Over time, the cemetery became overcrowded, and the remains of older graves had to be moved.

In the 16th century, the bones were placed inside the chapel. The decoration visitors see today was largely created in 1870 by woodcarver František Rint, who organized the bones into the artistic displays that made the ossuary famous worldwide.
